My First Product Review: BugNikDesigns

I am so happy to be doing my very first product review for BugNikDesigns! BugNikDesigns makes felt play food for little hands. I found BugNikDesigns on, and I knew I just had to find out more about it. Maybe I'm projecting my love of play food onto my poor daughter, but come on, who doesn't love play food? I also loved the idea of soft felt play food instead of plastic. Karen from BugNikDesigns was kind enough to send me a pancake set for review. I received two pancakes, two strawberries, two blueberries, two banana slices and two cookie sticks.

My first delightful surprise was the detail! The banana slices are impressively real, as are the strawberries. Her blueberries are two-toned, which shows care and dedication since they are so small. The pancakes have detail on them as well, which makes them so fun.

BugNikDesigns has quite the variety of play food, including cookies, eggs and bacon, popcorn, donuts and pasta.

I had just a few questions for Karen:

How did you decide to make felt food?

Felt food was something I had seen in a children's boutique years ago. After being very disappointed with our stock of plastic food toys around the house, I decided that I should design some fun food pieces for the kids. I started out crocheting some pieces, but ended up enjoying teh look and feel of the felt foods better! Of course, recycling is a big deal around my house, and so the recycled felt (made from plastic bottles - eco-fi) fit right into the plan. I have also found that the wool blend felts work beautifully for pieces that need a little more durability - also a form of recycling!

Do you custom make your orders, or do you keep the items in stock?

Most of the items that are listed in my shop are 'baked' once you order them. The items in the sets take more time to sew together than I had originally designed, but the intention is to have them stocked on the shelf waiting for you! My kids are a huge help in cutting out theshapes and stuffing teh items. We have a ton of fun thinking about new pieces to add to our line, although we're having a great time doing mostly sweet items now.

Do you have any new items coming out this spring?

There are some pastel cookies coming out this spring as well as some Easter donuts and linzer cookies.

How long have you been selling on

I've been selling felt food on Etsy since February 2009. I opened up the shop in October 2008, but wasn't quite sure which direction to go until we started playing around with these little designs at home. We'll see where we go from here. We're always coming up with new ideas and when I make a gift for a friend, someone always says "you should sell that on Etsy!" So, I'd love to get a feel for what the customers would like to see me come out with next!

Would I buy this product? Absolutely! Not only do I like play food, but I love the soft play food. I like that this product is green (made from recycled felt.) And I truly feel that the price is right for this kind of craftsmanship. Plus, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that a stay-at-home-mom makes and sells this out of her home. I love supporting small businesses; it's capitalism at its finest! The only downside, if there is one, is that some of the pieces are small. They would fail the "toilet paper tube" test, so keep the blueberries and banana slices away from little ones who actually might want to eat these yummy looking treats.

And now for the very best part: BugNikDesigns would like to offer a 25% discount to anyone who mentions this blog while making a purchase! Here's what you do:

  1. Visit and decide which items to buy!

  2. Contact Karen through an Etsy "conversation" and mention the code PPP10 and which item you would like to buy. To do this, look for "contact" in the bugnikdesign's info box. Karen will then list that item as 'reserved' with your username and use the discount.

That's all there is to it! I hope you enjoy these products as much as I do. I know your little Pumpkin Pies will love them too!

  1. How much do they cost? Are they machine washable? Just curious.

  2. They're priced between $5 and $14, depending on the size of the set. To wash, just spot clean with a damp sponge and lay out to dry. :)

  3. Those are really cute. I could see my kids loving them.

  4. These are adorable! I LOVE those cookie sticks (we always have the real ones in our house!)

  5. I love love love fake food! Honestly, it's probably one of my most favorite toy items in the world. Thanks for the heads up! Felt food is really cute.
