DVD Review and Giveaway: Unplanned
Abby Johnson was the director of a key Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas when an ultrasound-assisted abortion caused her to walk away from her job and into the doors of the Coalition for Life office down the street. Her decision brought the wrath of the company she had been so passionate about raining down on her, which in turn made her a national news story that helped solidify her position as a public figure in the right-to-life debate.
Unplanned is a documentary based on her book of the same title. It takes you back to the Planned Parenthood clinic she worked at for years as a pro-choice advocate. Abby charts her journey, noting the choices she made and series of events that lead her to each of those decisions, ultimately leading to her current mission to fight for life and help women in crisis.
This documentary is captivating. In true documentary fashion, it is simply a series of images, sometimes repeated, but coupled with real-life interviews with Abby, her family, and the people of Coalition for Life who prayed specifically for her for eight years makes it feel like you might be sitting in the room with her, listening to her heart speak.
I am unapologetically pro-life. However, I never know quite what to do about it. The reasoning and logic from the other side of the fence is so seductive, and we have so many nuts on our side of the fence that do damage to our cause by their harsh, offensive attacks. This DVD opened my eyes to the power behind simply praying for the people who think that they are doing good work by helping women who think they have no other option but to terminate the life growing inside of them. The Coalition for Life staff not only prayed for Abby, but they made their presence known, consistently and graciously, so that when her time of awakening came, she didn't think twice about going to them, knowing she would be welcomed with open arms.
I'm not quite sure who this DVD is for. I don't know if it would change the mind of someone who has dedicated their life to the abortion industry, although Abby's story is compelling and filled with the validity that can only come from someone who has also been immersed in that world. Maybe it's for those of us who choose to stand on the side of pro-life, to remind us that the people who walk through the doors of an abortion clinic, both as patients and as workers, are people with stories as to why they've made those decisions. We always try to point out that abortionists are very quick to dehumanize unborn babies as simply lumps of unfeeling tissue; but sometimes I think we dehumanize the women who are there making the decisions as simply selfish monsters. This DVD can also remind us that Jesus forgives completely, and we need to show that kind of forgiveness, even to the women and workers who have done things that they cannot take back.
