Book Review: Awakening

As usual, I must have missed something in the book description when I selected this book, because it turned out to be something WAY different than what I expected.  I saw the heading "21 Days to Revolutionize Your Relationship With God" and thought "Cool."  And the book does give a plan for a 21 day the form of fasting.  Not a bad idea, just not what I expected.

Stovall Weems is the pastor of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, Florida, and has written this book as a challenge to believers to awaken to a new level in their relationship with God.  He believes that everyone's walk with God can be fresh, satisfying and passionate.  The only thing in the way is the "gunk" of today's culture that collects on our spirits and dims the voice of God.  The way to get past that is through fasting.

I suppose this book has caused a crisis of belief for me.  I've never fasted.  I grew up seeing my parents fast and in churches that would occasionally speak on fasting, but I definitely haven't heard much about it recently.  Stovall believes that everyone should fast and fast regularly, and even declares that once people really get the hang of it, they'll actually enjoy it and the clarity it brings.  Not to mention the closeness one will experience with God.  I don't know if I have any plans to fast.  And that's all I have to say about that.

This book was sent to me by WaterBrook Press in exchange for an honest review, as a part of their Blogging for Books program.
